Mamma Mia!
Whether you’re an Abba Fan or just looking for a fun summer film, Mamma Mia! is worth a look.
Review: Mamma Mia!
The film is based on the Broadway Musical comprised totally of Abba songs from the 70’s. The story is of bride to be Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) using her upcoming nuptials, at her mother’s Greek bed and breakfast, as an opportunity to find her father. Her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), is the former lead singer of a disco trio. Donna’s diary revealed to Sophie a summer of love which led to the possibility of three men being her father. After a lifetime of not knowing him, she was hopeful he would then be able to walk her down the aisle. Sophie invited the potential dads to the wedding without her mother’s knowledge. The three men accept the invitation and the fun ensues. Old loves are rekindled and new loves begin all intermixed with the fabulous musical numbers.
The scenery is breathtaking. What a travelogue for the Greek Isles! The performance of the young Amanda Seyfried (“Big Love”, “Mean Girls” and more) was seamless. She can sing and act, plus is a natural beauty. Christine Baranski (Tanya) is always enjoyable. But the “Who Knew?” award goes to Meryl Streep. She is an amazing singer. We all knew about her acting ability, but her singing – wow! The weak link is vocal performance of Pierce Brosnan. He is great to look at and he’s a good actor, but was there no other middle aged actor available who can sing?
Mamma Mia has you singing, tapping your toes and wanting to dance in the aisles. A fun, feel good, forget your troubles movie.
