Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Kevin Smith got a two-fold win with the MPAA for his upcoming comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno. After the Motion Picture Association of America decided that the film's content deserved an NC-17 rating, director Kevin Smith made an appeal.
Zack and Miri Make an R-Rated Porno
Now this has to work out in Kevin Smith's favor. After the MPAA decided this Porno was worthy of an NC-17 rating, they have accepted the director's appeal to drop the rating to a more audience friendly R. What makes this great is that not only does the rating speak favorably of the film, but there are sure to be a ton of people visiting the theater just to see why it was originally tagged NC-17.
I never understood why this distinction made such a difference, as both require one to be seventeen to enter the theater. Yeah, I know R allows for the company of an adult, but maybe this could be made up with the arrival of more perverts. Just a theory - probably wrong.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno tells the story of best friends and roommates who try to make a homemade porn flick to dig themselves out of debt.
Smith said the MPAA ratings board objected to two sex scenes involving co-stars Jason Mewes and Katie Morgan. After the movie's initial NC-17 rating, Smith said he trimmed those scenes as far as he was willing to go but was unable to convince the board to lower the rating.
"They felt it was rather sexually graphic. My point is, it was comically graphic. All the sex in the movie with the exception of one scene is very cartoonish, very campy," Smith said. "It wasn't designed to titillate."
Fortunately for Smith, the appeals board is a separate panel than the ratings board, and they viewed his movie Tuesday while listening to his arguments for an R rating.
Zack and Miri Makes a Porno opens to theaters on October 31st.
