The brain trust at Columbia Pictures has been taking extended visits to the library -- or Borders, whatever you like to use for this story -- to find the next book or series of books worth adapting. It just so happens that a #1 bestselling author has just that.

Columbia Pictures to Adapt Maximum Ride

Columbia Pictures has acquired the screen rights to Maximum Ride, the bestselling novel series by James Patterson.

The series follows six children who have been genetically altered to be 98% human and 2% bird. The kids, who are bred to fly, escape a lab-rat existence and are then pursued by their scientist creators, who send a pack of part-human part-wolves called Erasers to hunt them down.

Sounds 2% cool and 98% ridiculous, I know, but the series is surprisingly popular and is expecting its fifth installment next year.

Ari Arad has been brought on to produce with Don Payne given the task of adapting the first novel to a working screenplay. Payne's credits aren't exactly er, fantastic. The scribe blew it with Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer but did charm me somehow with My Super Ex-Girlfriend.
