The Dark Knight
Though Pineapple Express saw an early opening that suggested the comedy to be the new box office champ, the title remains with The Dark Knight.
The Dark Knight Beats Pineapple Express
The Dark Knight staged a comeback on Saturday to help the film earn $26 million during its fourth weekend at the box office. TDK has now earned $441.5 million domestically, a number that has helped the film surpass Shrek 2 as the third highest domestic gross of all time.
If The Dark Knight can keep its current pace, the film should easily surpass Star Wars ($461 million) for the second highest gross of all time.
Somewhere Lucas is spinning.
Warner Bros. will have to remain content with the #2 spot, as there is no way that The Dark Knight can catch the domestic record-holder, Titanic.
Though they didn't take the top spot during their opening bow, Columbia Pictures has to be happy with the opening weekend take of Pineapple Express. The stoner comedy earned $22.4 million over the weekend and $40.4 million since its Wednesday opening.
Of one were to get specific, Pineapple Express actually beat The Dark Knight on per-theater earnings; $7,292 compared to $6,457.
While Brendan Fraser's The Mummy 3 isn't doing so hot domestically -- dropped 60% in its second weekend to bring its total cume to $70.7 million -- his other film, Journey to the Center of the Earth, continues to impress. Though Earth only opened to $21 million, the film has shown some serious box office legs and is on track to achieve the rare feat of more than quadrupling its opening weekend gross.
