Scarlett Johansson on Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Now that Scarlett Johansson has made three movies with Woody Allen, everyone wants to call her his muse. He does latch on to certain actresses, but to Johansson the relationship is much more practical.

Scarlett Johansson Loves Woody

"Every single junket that we've done so far, we always get the muse thing," she said. "We always say no, it's not that way, it's not that way, and I don't think it is that way. I think I'm fortunate enough to fit in to the young girl part of the story, the young woman, just the same as Judy Davis would fit in to a certain part or Dianne Weist would fit into a certain part. I think Woody as well as I, both of us appreciate how wonderful it is to work with your friends. It's fun and we always have a great time when we do it. We entertain each other, and we understand each other and we poke each other I don't think that Woody sits at home you know, with like a thing of Lo Mein, and a typewriter thinking, 'What is Scarlett doing now and how can her life sort of inspire this tale?' I know certainly not."

Also, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. "It's hard to explain how you collaborate with someone. It's difficult to put into words really because relationships between people are so complicated and the way that you communicate is complicated. I think that I have an understanding of his written work as far as how it translates into character development. I think I have an idea about that and certainly that's what I'm hired for, to develop that and breathe life into it. I think that Woody and I share that vision and that's why we work well together. We share the vision for the character."

In Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Johansson plays Cristina, an American girl who gets involved with a Spanish man, and later allows his ex-wife to join in. "If it's something like, 'Why do I decide to get out of the relationship at this point?' At that point I felt that it was almost too removed or something. I said, 'How am I so removed from this relationship all of a sudden after this intimacy?' Woody is able to explain that to me, explain the psychology behind it. That's what great about collaborating with someone who knows what he wants. Then I can appreciate that. Sometimes you just need to be informed and that's directing and being directed."

The trio does consummate their three-way relationship, but don't get too excited. "When you're shooting it's so like there's like 60 grown men eating salami sandwiches, kind of waiting for when they can get up and watch the game or whatever. You just think, 'God, are we rolling?' because there's like trays of food being passed. 'Oh, we are rolling, okay.' Nobody cares when you're doing it, of course. It's like your day at work and this is part of the story and then of course you know people get wind and they get excited because they associate like two women who wear gowns at an award show and like gosh, the possibilities… It's ridiculous."

Vicky Cristina Barcelona opens to theaters on August 15th.
