Tropic Thunder
Though The Dark Knight (finally) lost out to Tropic Thunder over the weekend, Warner Bros. still has plenty of reason to celebrate.
Tropic Thunder Takes the Box Office
Tropic Thunder opened to $37 million for the five-day and $26 million over the weekend. The big-budget comedy landed in-between Pineapple Express and Step Brothers in terms of opening performance, but those cost far less to produce.
Tropic Thunder's strong (but could be stronger) numbers helped the comedy bump The Dark Knight from the #1 spot, a position the film has held onto the last four weeks. While the film missed out on a fifth weekend at number one, the Batman Begins sequel dipped a miniscule 36% to earn an estimated $16.8 million in its fifth frame. The strong weekend helped bring the film's total cume to $471.5 million, an amount greater than the $461 million earned by the original Star Wars. The Dark Knight is now the all-time second biggest earner domestically.
Not that the Star Wars franchise needs to be kicked while its down, but Star Wars: The Clone Wars also lost out to The Dark Knight during its opening week with $15.5 million. Though the film clenched the #3 spot, Warner Bros. was hoping for more.
Featuring images that can make even the toughest adults lose sleep -- or their appetite for that matter -- Mirrors took the #4 spot during its opening bow thanks most in part that the film was the only horror in the market. The film opened to an estimated $11.1 million.
While Woody Allen hoped that seeing Scarlett Johansson in a threesome would bring audiences to the theaters, Vicky Cristina Barcelona only opened to $3.7 million, allowing the film to slide into the #10 spot during its opening bow.
