Hamlet 2
The idea of a sequel to Shakespeare is already ridiculous. In Hamlet 2, they throw Jesus Christ into the mix too. In drama teacher Dana Marschz's script involves a time machine so the Dane can have an adventure with the messiah. Director Andrew Fleming explained the creative development of this.
Andy Fleming Directs Hamlet 2
"Originally, because we've been working with the script for six years, there was just this sort of placeholder," Fleming said. "It was just a series of sort of crazy images. It had like the cast of Friends and Monica Lewinsky and Jesus and Hilary Clinton and Dick Cheney to having sex with the devil, all these kinds of things. They were just random images and it was just sort of this placeholder. Then we sort of started from scratch right before we were shooting and did something much more coherent, obviously."
The inspiration for being inappropriate towards Jesus actually came from a friend, who found humor in an even more serious subject. "A friend of ours made this movie about rape, actually. She was raped and she made this movie about it. It's called Open Window, it's actually a very good movie, but parts of the movie are very funny because it's about the anxiety that people have. See, you got very quiet. If somebody is raped, people around them get very anxious if you talk about rape. Part of her movie is actually funny. We were talking about victims of rape and there is something wrong there if somebody starts talking in general conversation about, 'Well, I was raped,' everybody gets very, very anxious about it. So that was one inspiration."
The film also includes a celebrity cameo, Elisabeth Shue as herself. The script actually left it open for anyone willing to mock themselves. "We said, 'Famous actress' and it was really weird in the read-through because we hadn't cast her yet. 'Oh, I loved you in Famous Movie. And I love you also in Famous Funny Movie!' But she read it and she saw the potential there. She was completely down for being humiliated, which I just loved her for. It was her idea that in the class the kids don't know who she is."
The play in Hamlet 2 is a musical, of course. Why wouldn't it be? The full soundtrack evolved over time. "We were without guidance in the music department. We always talked about there being a 'Rock Me Sexy Jesus' number but originally in the script you didn't really see that much of the show. It was more just reactions, but there was always this idea of the sexy Jesus. It just kind of sprang up, this little ditty. We just started writing songs. It was really the kind of thing where as we were making the movie, as we were prepping the movie, we just had more of the musical there because it was kind of a cheat. You didn't really see that much of it in the script. And people kept saying, 'Well, what's the show?' We were like, 'We don't know. We don't know.' Then sort of panicking, writing as many crazy songs as possible, it just kind of grew and grew and grew. It was kind of like putting on a show."
Hamlet 2 opens to theaters on August 22nd.
