Hamlet 2
Hamlet 2 is actually about my high school English teacher. In Hamlet 2 he's a drama teacher, but my guy did all the school plays. So, the question is, how did these filmmakers know my 10th grade English teacher? Writer Pam Brady revealed the answer.
Pam Brady Shakespeares Hamlet 2
"I had the same experience with an English teacher," said Brady. "That's what we always felt like. There was always that teacher, everyone's had this experience. [We] had a Latin teacher that lived in the classroom in my high school. It was just depressing. You always wonder what goes on, but we knew what went on when the Latin teacher went home because he was home."
In her script, the teacher writes a Shakespeare sequel to save his drama department. His outrageous antics include sacrilege and profanity. An R rating was never an issue. "No, luckily since it was an independently financed movie, we got to do whatever we wanted from the get-go. That's something we realized early on, that it had to be an R."
There's a lot of satire going on in Hamlet 2, and some heart. So don't be fooled by the marketing campaign, which emphasizes the screwball scenes. "I think originally when we started out we wanted to have like a delusional character that will never give up. We just kept throwing everything at him. So the first act's like, 'This poor guy!' And I think just as a function of that, when he finally succeeds at something you're like, 'Thank god.' And Steve Coogan's such a great actor that you really feel sorry for him."
Brady was a co-writer on the South Park movie and Team America. She still maintains a slight involvement in the show. "Off and on. I go back. They have these things, they have retreats once or twice a year where they go to a fabulous resort destination and break stories. I use that loosely. I'll go to those."
Hamlet 2 opens to theaters on August 22nd.
