My favorite character on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and I love everyone on it because they’ve given me my dream of a show since childhood, is Derek Reese. How brilliant an idea to have another Reese, who’s not Kyle, but represents the family in a very Terminator way. It started as a guest spot for Brian Austin Green, but now it’s a regular role.

“I'm here,” said Green. “They signed me for six years so I'm not going anywhere, because of the fans. The fans liked the character. People love the character. I think it works out well with John Connor also, to have Derek around, to have that connection to his dad, into the future, know what he's really going to be fighting for and what it's about.”
Even fans who were skeptical at first can now see that Derek is not the new Kyle. “Right, there's a huge separation. They're totally different people. I think Josh and the writers have done a really good job at showing that, that Derek really was the older brother and it ties in well with what Michael Biehn did in the films, because he had a lot more heart than Derek does. He had a much softer side and it's what Sarah fell in love with. Then to realize that he had an older brother that was the one that was like fighting to protect him and make sure he was okay and everything was okay, it makes sense that he would then be softer.”

The Reese factor did give Green some street cred, at least with people who only previously knew him from Beverly Hills 90210. “The Reese factor is just that sense of the Reeses, we were some of the top fighters in the future. We were the best of the best. We were really fighting the fight. In the future episode that we had, we were talking about terminator kills and how many we each had. We just completely trumped everybody else. It became a science for us. So to then be able to come back into this and play that but be in this time is cool. It's a fun twist on it because he's still as badass as he was in the future but it's in a different way for a different reason now.”
Even Green himself wasn’t sure he could play such a role, and he thanks his detractors who came around, as much as his supporters.
“Well, they felt the way that I did. For me, I auditioned on a Thursday morning and started work Friday morning. When I auditioned, I had no idea who the character was. They had changed the names, the sides, so there was no Reese attached to anything. As soon as I got the script on Thursday to work on and I realized that the character was who he was, it terrified me. I was a huge fan of the films and for me, it was really a thing of just wanting to do it justice and not let anybody down. I'm a sci-fi fan. I grew up loving Star Wars. For me, I know how much weight I put on the new films when they came out. So it meant a lot to me and it really meant a lot to me when people liked what I was doing and came around and slowly started to forget about 90210 and now accept me in this. And it's honestly the reason why I'm here today. If fans didn't like the character and they didn't respond the way they did, I'd be doing the new 90210. What else would I be doing? It's true.”
