Bangkok Dangerous
Though Nicolas Cage seemed to think that Bangkok Dangerous was a rare film worth (re)making, moviegoers openly showed their disagreement by not seeing it. No matter, thanks to an incredibly weak box office, the film still took the top spot over the weekend.
Bangkok Dangerous Takes Top BO Spot
Not the best opening bow we've seen. Cage's Bangkok Dangerous earned a pitiful $7.8 million during its first weekend of release. Though already in its fourth frame, Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder almost took the top spot (again) with $7.5 million.
Thanks in part to the kick-off of the NFL football season, the entire domestic take this weekend falls somewhere between $64 and $66 million. With numbers this low, the weekend of September 5th, 2008 can now be marked as the weakest in eight years. 2003 did hold the title of softest weekend with $67 million.
This weekend was down 17% from the same frame last year, which enjoyed another remake: 3:10 to Yuma. The Western starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe saw a much stronger bow with $14.7 million.
Though the numbers were low, Lionsgate claims that Bangkok Dangerous opened to expectations. While I don't know how they plan to swing it, Lionsgate's Steve Rothenberg claims that the film will be "nicely profitable."
We'll just have to wait and see what sort of legs Nicolas Cage has got for next weekend. Expect Burn After Reading to give Bangkok and the rest of the bracket trouble next week.
