Burn After Reading
After experiencing a box office low last weekend, Focus Feature's Burn After Reading arrived to help give fall a way better kickoff.
Burn After Reading Reigns Fire on the Box Office
Focus Features best debut to date, Burn After Reading opened to an estimated $19.4 million during its opening bow. Thanks to the film's upper-estimate numbers, the overall weekend box office landed close to $100 million; only the second time in history for a non-Labor Day weekend in September.
The film did have some competition. Burn was up against three other wide releases including Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys, Righteous Kill and The Women. Tyler Perry's latest installment came in second with $18 million while Righteous Kill, picking up the remaining moviegoers looking for an R-rated flick, took third with $16.5 million.
The Women debuted to $10 million, which is a strong number considering that the film got blasted by the critics.
Thanks to the three wide releases, plus a small kick from Towelhead's excellent per-screen average, this weekend's box office was up 30% over the same frame last year.
