Eagle Eye
Flying in on the thriller ticket, DreamWorks' Eagle Eye easily took the number one spot with $29.2 million during its opening bow. Helping give the fall box office a much needed kick, the film saw the fourth best opening ever for September.
Eagle Eye #1 at Box Office
While Eagle Eye played strong, Spike Lee's WWII film Miracle at St. Anna quickly became another casualty of cinema. Though bowing to a wide release, the film was only able to take in $3.5 million from 1,185 screens. Can somebody say disappointment?
Those looking for a middle-aged Notebook found relief in another Nicholas Sparks adaptation, Nights in Rodanthe. Turns out there were quite a few couples seeking depression this weekend, as the film took the number two spot with $13.6 million.
The big surprise of the weekend came down to Kirk Cameron and his Fireproof. Though only available on 839 screens, the film took the number four spot with $6.5 million. Incredible, considering I hadn't even heard of the film until a week before its release.
For those of you wondering who came in at number three, the spot fell to Lakeview Terrace, which enjoyed a second-weekend take of $7 million.
The only other three films to open better than Eagle Eye in September were Sweet Home Alabama ($30 million), Rush Hour ($33 million) and The Exorcism of Emily Rose ($30 million).
DreamWorks credits Shia LaBeouf along with the film's thriller aspects for Eagle Eye's big opening. In short, "It's a good ride." (DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan)
