Pushing Daisies Pushing Daisies
Ellen Greene plays Aunt Vivian on Pushing Daisies. The aunts are clinically depressed and holed up in their dark mansion, and Greene says fans can expect it to get darker and more complex in the second season.

Ellen Greene Promises Darker Daisies

"The thing is, when you last left us, [Aunt Lily] was high as a kite and I was very happy thinking we were going to go on the road again," Greene reminded viewers. "There's so much to go back down to because I had risen. What's so nice is on the truth level, it's nice to see how people deal with how to choose, I think it's brave to choose to be happy. It's a great line and it's a great idea for everybody because everyone is trying to begin again, to start living. Everyone learns. It's pretty dreary out there, so in this wonderful world, it does have also real, wonderful lessons. Yeah, I cry a lot but it will get better. I know that because he's told me."

While Ned and Chuck are exploring bee factories, nunneries and frescort services, the aunts are still in their bird-filled house. "Our first episode coming back on October first, when we're on our set with all the birds in the cages, it's amazing to look at that set. When we're working, all the birds are amazing. There is one who's really cantankerous."

Little pieces of the aunts' characters are revealed through flashbacks. Greene knows more of the story than we do. "Oh, there is a definite backstory. I know a lot of secrets. I know a lot of them and I know where they're going towards. Some things I don't know and then they'll tell me."

Coming from the musical theater, as did costar Kristin Chenoweth, Greene embraces opportunities to perform music on the show. "I think they're going to do it differently. I think they were going to do a whole musical episode and then I think now they really like doing it sparser, a surprise. I think you shouldn't sing unless you can't speak anymore. That's why 'Morning is Broken' was I believe in my brain. That dress was also similar to Anna's and I think it might have been Anna's dress in her closet. I think I was trying to get out of my mourning and 'Morning is Broken' is also that double entendre. But I think that was also possibly a song I sang to her. So I was trying to begin again. So I was singing it to myself because I was alone. I do think music should have a reason, like there's a great reason in the first episode that Kristin is going to do."

Pushing Daisies airs Wednesdays on ABC.
