Don't get me wrong, I love Johnny Depp and think that he is definitely the key ingredient for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Though Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was another step down from the original, Disney couldn't ignore the fact that this franchise makes billions. With Depp ready to return to Captain Sparrow from the beginning, I'm surprised that it cost so much to bring him back.
How much does Depp cost?
Depp Getting $56 Million for Pirates 4
According to AOL, Johnny Depp will receive the largest upfront payment in history with $56 million for Pirates 4. And you thought our economy was in the dumps!
While the number does sound (and is) ridiculously high, Disney knows that it will bring a return on investment.
A source said: "It's a hell of a lot of money for one movie but there’s only one man who can play Captain Jack Sparrow - and that's Johnny Depp."
"Pirates just wouldn't be the same without him, so they were more than willing to smash the record books to land Depp again. He's been the star of the show every time."
The news comes only a week after Will Smith was named the "highest earning actor in Hollywood" by Forbes with his $70 million in earnings in a single year. Depp's new deal will smash that er, record with $123 million in a single year.
The source who reported the deal jokes that Depp is laughing all the way to the bank.
