Beverly Hills Chihuahua
Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio's heads must be spinning. While Body of Lies looked strong enough to take the top spot at the box office over the weekend, the film ended up getting pissed on by Disney's pet Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
After catching the feature trailer for Beverly Hills Chihuahua months back I would have never predicted that the film would end up at the top of any box office, let alone twice. But with a minuscule decline of 40% over the weekend, Disney's small barker proved to have a big bite. Make that another $17.5 million!
Picking up the always surprisingly strong horror market, Sony Screen Gems Quarantine came in at number two with $14.2 million.
Though Ridley Scott's spy thriller, Body of Lies, starred both Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio, the film was only able to take in a disappointing $13.1 million; a number that easily gave it the fourth spot.
Another wide release, The Express, couldn't convince sport fans to visit the theaters over the weekend and came in at number six with $4.7 million.
While City of Ember's first trailer arrived with tons of hype, the film's momentum had been smoldering ever since. With Fox doing the adaptation, we're not exactly surprised, but that still shouldn't mean only $3.2 million on its opening bow; or should it? As a surprise to us, this is actually what Fox was expecting. Way to keep those expectations low gang.
Though the weekend box office was up 18% when compared to the last Columbus Day weekend, none of the studios look happy.
