Now that the whole Terrence Howard debacle is behind us, we can begin focusing on War Machine who, as far as we can tell, will have an important role in the sequel to Iron Man. Fortunately for Marvel, it looks like they have a head start on the character, as illustrator Phil Saunders already created some concept art for the character back before Iron Man.
Iron Man's War Machine
We have all three Mark suits and now a prototype created for War Machine.
“These three images I did at the very end of production as alternate suit designs that would have been in a Hall of Armor coda at the end of the film,” writes Saunders. “I spent a lot of time on developing this [War Machine] suit, which was of course cut from the script about half way through pre-production. Originally it was going to be called the MK IV armor and would have been weaponized swap-out parts that would be worn over the original MK III armor. Earlier versions were red and gold, and would have been worn by Tony Stark in the final battle sequence.”
Iron Man
As you can see from the art, War Machine's suit is similar to Iron Man's except for the fact that it throws off the hot rod red and is armed to the teeth. Excessive, I know. Thanks to /Film for spotting the artwork. You can check out other illustrations here. "
Just in case you haven't heard, Don Cheadle has stepped in for Terrence Howard to play Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark's military buddy who becomes War Machine.
