Quentin Tarantino has done some last-minute recruiting for his Inglourious Basterds by picking up both Samuel L. Jackson and Maggie Cheung.
Samuel L. Jackson and Meggie Cheung Join Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds
According to Playlist, Maggie Cheung has been cast as Madame Mimieux, the French matron of the Cinematheque that takes in the protagonist Shosanna (Melanie Laurent) when she is homeless and being sought by the Nazis. While it would seem odd to cast a Chinese actress to play the part of a French woman, Maggie Cheung is fluent in the language, so I guess Quentin is making do.
Samuel L. Jackson wanted a role in the new Star Wars movies and he got it. It turns out that he also really wanted a role in Inglorious Basterds, so he got that too. His casting is even stranger than Cheung's. Jackson's character won't do much but rather serve as the film's narrator. He will pop in here and there, but only to give context and background information.
I guess sometimes you have to drop down a notch or two to get what you want.
