Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Now Universal has the right idea. If a person doesn't have a blu-ray player, they should make out just fine with the 3-Disc Special Edition of Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Not only does the DVD look amazing upconverted on a blu-ray player, but it comes with lots and lots of goodies,
DVD Review: Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Right when you get the 3-Disc Special Edition of Hellboy II you can immediately appreciate it's cover. Pretty badass and a sleeve I can guarantee you won't want to throw away.
Next comes the feature DVD itself. As I mentioned, this movie upconverts so beautifully that I can only wonder how much better Blu-ray really is. I kid you not, the DVD feels very HD. When it comes to the movie itself, I was stoked on receiving HB II as I was unable to catch it in theaters. A great improvement over the first installment, Hellboy II is a lot of fun. The only catch is that you never really feel anything for the characters nor think they are ever in any real danger. Ron Perlman, however, is awesome as Hellboy and his personality traits are what carry the film.
With three discs, there are bound to be some extras. Yes, there are featurettes. Yes, there is the usual director's commentary. And, yes, there are deleted scenes. What I would have liked was some more behind the scenes footage of Perlman pulling hijinks, but there wasn't much of that.
No matter, as what makes the 3-disc set perfect is the final DVD, which is a Digital Copy of the film. Since I'm a complete advocate of attaching Digital Copies to DVDs, I was thrilled to find it here. I already have HB II ready for the road on my iPhone.
As a 3-Disc set, you couldn't really ask for anything more from Hellboy II.
