I'm getting spoiled by Blu Ray but regular DVDs can still look pretty great, especially when they remaster old movies. Paramount's Centennial Collection offers three examples of fine restorations with Sabrina, Sunset Boulevard and Roman Holiday.
On DVD: Centennial Collection DVDs
These 4:3 films cut a solid frame in the middle of a 16x9 set. It's not Blu Ray detail but it is the perfect DVD print. The clarity highlights distinct shadows in black and white, and all grain is hidden.
Sunset and Sabrina feature sharp lines all around, none of the soft focus of Turner Classic Movies airings. Roman is a little softer but still great. You actually see some detail in large bodies like pavement gravel and clothing fabrics so these are near Blu-Ray quality presentations on standard DVD.
