Ray Stevenson on Punisher: War Zone
Punisher: War Zone
The Punisher is still out there trying to make the villains pay for their crimes. Punisher: War Zone is his third cinematic attempt. This time, Ray Stevenson plays Frank Castle. His focus was on the seemingly endless need Castle has to keep punishing.
Ray Stevenson is the Punisher
"I remember seeing a documentary about the Normandie invasion in the second World War," said Stevenson. "There was this American GI who took part in the Normandie landings and he said he killed his first enemy that day. He says he remembers his face as clear as day. He said from that moment on, he kept popping up, in a different uniform or whatever, in a different place, a different city for the rest of his war experience. He said that's what his nightmares were about, that he would just keep popping up, just keep popping up. It was like he just kept killing the same thing."
Castle may fulfill a base desire many people have, but Stevenson hopes to show that it is not worth indulging. "Many of us have at some time come across a situation where we thought to take the law into their own hands, that desire to do that. Then obviously most of us stop because you have faith in the police or judicial system. That's not the way to go. It's anarchy."
When Castle takes out the bad guys in the film, Stevenson gives credit to his stunt doubles who do some of the most badass moves. "Thankfully, I had a wonderful stunt double, so I could watch him dangle from wires. I was very, very lucky, it's a guy called Jeff Wolfe and I'm very lucky that he gets it. He's not a fall guy. He's an acting stunt. He's an intelligent, responsible guy and he gets the fact. I brought him in on the whole early process and said, 'We are going to be Frank Castle.' This is a seamless pass over, so I trained with him and we did all the build up to the stunts and all this sort of stuff, so it would be seamless. Hopefully there isn't a difference."
While most movie stars try to take credit for all the action, Stevenson is happy to identify where he ends and Wolfe begins. "It's a collaboration as well and because we'd work on it, we'd work the fights together, we work sequences together, and then I'd say, 'And this is where you go through the window. And this is where I roll out and bring the gun up.' But it was great. It was great to work like that and long may it continue I think."
Punisher: War Zone opens to theaters on September 12th.
