Now that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is delayed until summer, you won't get your Hermione Granger fix this year. At least you can hear her voice in The Tale of Despereaux, where she plays Princess Pea. Recording for the animated film took place over the course of many Potter shoots.
Watson is Princess Pea in The Tale of Despereaux
"Tale of Despereaux was made over quite a long period of time," Watson said. "So I was kind of brought in for a couple of days here and there and then they'd progress a bit further or something would change and then I'd come and do another three or four days. So it was quite spread out and it was a long process. In that sense, it wasn't like a very intense workload that made it difficult."
As her first voice only role, Watson had to adjust to the technical side of such filmmaking. "It did take me a little bit of time. I mean when you work on a film, you do voice recording and if anything’s gone wrong you do a couple of days with ADR. Although my performance was quite physical in the film because I'm getting kidnapped and there's a rat in my room and whatever, it was hard trying to get all of that into my voice, the emotional and the out of breath and the screaming and it was fun."

Costar Matthew Broderick actually came in to record with Watson when he was available. In lieu of Desperaux's voice, she had a stand-in to work with. "It was fun, it was. I was actually given a toy Despereaux about this big who I could speak to, so I had kind of a substitute. It was really interesting and it was great fun."
The Tale of Despereaux opens to theaters on December 19th.
