Demi Lovato is the newest Disney musical phenom to get her own show. Sonny with a Chance casts Lovato as the newest star of a kids' sketch comedy show. Backstage antics provide the fodder for weekly comedy, like a tweenage 30 Rock.
Demi Lovato Gives Sonny a Chance
"30 Rock is one of my favorite shows," Lovato said. "So Tina Fey is my idol in comedy. To be playing on a show that's similar to it, just the Disney-fied version, it's an honor. I watch that show. She's great, and I aspire to be like her."
There seem to be more food fights in Sonny though. That gives her some problems. "You have to continue a scene throughout the day with egg salad all over you," Lovato said. "One time I broke out into an allergic reaction. That was challenging. I didn’t know, but it splattered onto me and I got blotchy and everything. It was so funny."
Lovato has her own fun with the edible props too. "One time, everybody get ready for this, we had a food fight scene in the cafeteria at the commissary and they had these bread rolls and bagels. We were waiting to go into the scene because in the middle of the scene we walk-in and we walk-out. But while we were waiting to go out we had rolls and we were like, 'I wonder if they will ever notice if we roll a bread roll across the set.'”
Look for the roll making its way across the floor in the actual scene. The singer has definitely learned to appreciate the fun of acting since her earlier attempts.
"I always thought that music was my number one passion, but I had gone through a period of time in school where I had just been dealing with a lot of rejection in my life especially working in acting and auditioning and not getting anything. I decided to quit for a while, but it was when I quit that I realized that I have a true passion for acting. That's when I picked it back up again, and once I had that drive, it just took off, and I just started booking. I guess I had to realize what my life was like without it, and now that I'm able to work on a show and do movies like Camp Rock and Princess Protection Program, I just really realize the art, and it's amazing. It's like a hobby to me. Music comes more naturally."
As for the comedy part of Sonny, Lovato is still finding her inner clown. "There also was a period where I didn't find myself funny at all. I was auditioning for As the Bell Rings, and I went to my acting coach, and I was crying, and I was nervous for the audition. I said, 'I'm not funny. I just can't do it,' and she told me, 'Demi, have confidence in yourself.' And I went in there, and I never thought that I would be funny enough to be on Disney Channel."
Sonny with a Chance premieres February 8 on Disney Channel.
