I was torn as to if I wanted to immerse myself into a new season of American Idol. Could I find someone I felt as strongly about as David Cook? I watched the auditions. I watched Hollywood Week. And yes, there were some good contestants. Then I watched the Season 8’s first Top 12 perform and once again I am hooked. I am not sure about this new format. Only three contestants will be voted into the final Top 12 with the final three coming from the judges’ “Wild Card” picks.
Having already seen the results show and knowing who the three top vote getters were – here is my take on Tuesday night.
American Idol: Season 8 Top 12
Certainly the best performance of the night was Alexis Grace. Who knew that tiny girl had such a big voice – wow! Sweet and Soulful – wow!
My second pick of the night was Ricky Braddy. But America did not choose him as one of their top three. Roughneck, Michael Sarver got the nod as the second contestant to move on. Ricky was robbed. (And I hope the judges have strong enough feelings about him to bring him along as one of the Wild Card picks.)
The most dramatic moment of the evening was Danny Gockey (good singer and sentimental favorite) vs. Tatiana Del Toro for the final spot. I was a little nervous – no, a lot nervous for the outcome. Although Tatiana performed well on Tuesday, I didn’t think she was one of the three best of the night. Could “Vote for the Worst” have a hand in her going through? But as the results were read, and Danny received the good news, I could not help but feel a bad for Tatiana. She is certainly the most emotionally fragile of all the contestants and I think it was mean to put her in this position. You know the producers were hoping she would have a meltdown. Some sensitivity should be shown versus “creating” good TV. Just my opinion.
I will assume the judges will bring Anoop Desai along on the Wild Card night in March. He is very popular with America and had an off night Tuesday. We don’t know yet how many contestants will be competing for those three spots.
Next week the Top 12 #2 will perform on Wednesday with results on Thursday (not our usual Tuesday/Wednesday routine). Well, here we go again!
