At the 81st Annual Academy Awards, as far as fashion goes, cream rises to the top. The most obvious trend of the night was the many actresses who chose to wear cream. Here are those who did it well.
81st Annual Academy Awards Fashion
Penelope Cruz (best supporting actress winner for “Vicky Christina Barcelona”) shone in vintage Pierre Balmain – the cream strapless ball gown had exquisite lace and ruching – a very Audrey Hepburn bun with bangs - a diamond choker and studs finished the look – a classic.
Taraji P. Henson (best supporting actress nominee from “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) was stunning in a cream strapless tiered Roberto Cavalli - accompanied with a vintage diamond collar necklace and a red clutch – one of the evening’s best.
Melissa George (“The Betrayed”, “Grey’s Anatomy”) perfection in a cream corseted gown with exaggerated mermaid tulle bottom - her blond tresses were half up and half down in curls.
Jessica Biel in Prada the cream strapless column gown with fold-over bow on the bodice – diamond drop earrings and diamond cuff - amazing.
Jennifer Aniston in a strapless beaded and sequined column - her hair (a little blonder) worn down with a fish tail braid as a headband – great look for her.
Anne Hathaway (best actress nominee for ” Rachel Getting Married”) in a beaded cream/champagne paillet encrusted Armani Prive form fitting strapless – beautiful.
Not cream, she called it “barely mint” – Sarah Jessica Parker in Dior Haute Couture – outstanding – the strapless gown with belted full skirt – her hair in diaphanous curls – always spectacular.
The best in black –
Angelina Jolie (best actress nominee “The Changling”) flawless in a black sweetheart strapless Elie Saab – her emerald drop earrings and ring were unbelievable – her hair styled away from her face in effortless curls – the pinnacle of ease and elegance.
Diane Lane in a black staples Dolce and Gabbana – the bodice had a frayed edge – pleated with a mermaid bottom - stunning.
Kate Winslet (best actress winner “The Reader”) in black and steel gray Yves Saint Laurent – the one shoulder gown with lace and beading was a stand out.
Shots of color were provided by Natalie Portman – pretty in pink strapless Rodarte; Freida Pinto (“Slumdog Millionaire”) in royal blue one shoulder lace John Galliano; Amy Adams (best supporting actress nominee “Doubt”) in a crimson architectural gown by Carolina Herrera – the gown somewhat overshadowed by the multi-stoned necklace; Melissa Leo (best actress nominee “Frozen River”) in a square neck umber Badgley Mishka.
Although most got it right, there were a few misses –
Miley Cyrus (“Bolt”) in Zuhair Murad – the v-neck and scalloped skirt were too mature and overwhelmed her.
Amanda Seyfried (“Mama Mia”) in a tangerine gown with too much bow at the waistline and an overpowering necklace – she is a young and beautiful – the dress should be too.
Marissa Tomei (best supporting actress nominee “The Wrestler”) in dove gray Versace – the one shoulder pleated gown with huge train was overdone.
Goldie Hawn (presenter best supporting actress) the nude gown was too tight with too much breast spill-over – Goldie, you are not a ‘starlet’ any more.
Tilda Swinton (presenter best supporting actress) loose tan top with neck bow and black bottom – something Bea Arthur might have worn in the ‘80’s.
