Friday the 13th
Whoa, didn't see this coming! (Sarcasm) After earning over $40 million during its opening bow,
Friday the 13th showed the necessary box office prowess to convince New Line brass to move forward with a sequel.
Sequel Alert: Friday the 13th
The studio, hoping not to jinx success, has picked up Friday scribes Damian Shannon and Mark Swift to return to write the next installment. But don't start thinking sequel, because that is not what New Line is going for. Instead, the project is being called a 'follow-up', which will have Jason Voorhees return as the villain, but use elements of the original franchise more as a jumping-off point than as a template.
Why not just call it a sequel? Well, besides the probably that director Marcus Nispel won't be returning, the film's two surviving castmates, Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti, might not come back either. Not that they wouldn't want to, it's just that their schedules are already jam packed thanks to their involvement in popular TV shows.
No matter what happens, New Line has no reason to worry. The horror genre is the most forgiving and they can get away with just about anything in another installment. As long as Jason's there, they're already halfway home.
