Watchmen
Though lower than expected, Watchmen still landed some records and took the top spot at the box office during its opening bow with $55.7 million.
Watchmen Box Office
To be honest, I made it a habit this weekend to constantly check in on the newest Watchmen reviews and see what people thought. The wonderful part is that the reviews go across the entire spectrum. Well, maybe not wonderful for Warner Bros., but wonderful for anyone who wants to see a film that doesn't follow that 'safe' formula. If you have been browsing the reviews, you were bound to find that some people disliked the film while others described it as amazing, epic or perfect. No matter which direction you might have went, the film still earned a respectable $55.7 million domestically and $27.5 million abroad; bringing Watchmen's worldwide total to $83.2 million. While Warner Bros. has to share with Fox on domestic receipts, Paramount has got the international box office all to itself.
Since it is impossible to compare Watchmen to any other film, many are looking to director Zack Snyder's last production, 300, as some sort of standard to live up to. Opening during the same month in 2007, that adaptation saw a $70.9 million opening (domestically). Though Watchmen fell short of that number, it is still the third highest March opening of all time after 300 and Ice Age: The Meltdown ($68 million).
The debut is also the fifth best for an R-rated film.
Thanks to Watchmen's strong debut, the weekend box office was up 11% over the same frame last year.
