With a recent Academy Award not even on his mantle yet, it comes as no surprise that Sean Penn is receiving offers left and right. Two weeks back we were told he was in negotiations to star in Fair Game and now he's in talks with Universal Pictures to star in the drama Cartel.
Sean Penn for Cartel
Directed by Asger Leth off a script by Peter Craig, Cartel will follow Ed Marker as he journeys to protect his son after his wife is brutally murdered in the gritty world of Mexican cartels.
If the plot feels familiar, then you've likely seen the 1993 Italian film La scorta, which followed four cops' struggle to guard a special prosecutor trying to bring mob bosses to justice. Okay, so not exactly the same thing, but the film has been contemporized to include more action for Penn.
Brian Grazer will produce.
Universal and Imagine are counting on Penn, and won't set a production start date until they know which direction he is heading.
