Monsters vs. Aliens
While the feedback on Monsters vs. Aliens was less than terrific, the 3D CG-animation still scored the best opening at the box office for 2009.
Monsters vs. Aliens Invades Box Office
With $58.2 million, Monsters vs. Aliens not only took the top spot over the weekend, but assured other upcoming 3D films that the medium is most definitely working. With 1,550 screens showing the film in 3D, the extra dimension represented 58% of the film's entire gross, though the technology was only present in 28% of the theaters showing the film.
The horror genre picked up the rest of the moviegoers with The Haunting in Connecticut, which came in at #2 with $23 million. Nicolas Cage's Knowing followed in the #3 spot with $14.7 million from its second frame.
For audiences looking for comedy that didn't favor the kids, I Love You, Man filled in nicely to take an estimated $12.6 million and the fourth top spot.
Thanks most in part to the top four films, the weekend box office has recovered completely with numbers up 40% over the same frame last year.
Not that HOllywood had cause to worry.
