Fast & Furious
No man is ever allowed to make fun of the Fast & Furious franchise ever again. Though the franchise looked to be on a slippery slope after the first installment, Universal Pictures has bounced back with this fourth installment. Taking in $72.5 million, the film saw the biggest domestic opening since The Dark Knight.
Fast & Furious Top Competitor
Thanks in part to Hispanic moviegoers and younger men, Fast & Furious is the best opening ever for the franchise, the month of April and Universal Pictures. The film did great overseas as well. With another $30.1 million, the film earned $102.6 million worldwide during its opening bow.
Monsters vs. Aliens, however, continues to dominate the international box office with $34.2 million over the weekend. The film took the #2 spot domestically with $34.2 million; a decline of 44% from its opening weekend.
The only other wide release, Adventureland, opened to $6 million.
Thanks to Fast & Furious and Monsters vs. Aliens, the weekend box office was up a whopping 80% over the same frame last year.
