As promised, Sony Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for District 9 and I'm immediately thinking that this is the dark horse candidate of the summer. With all the big tentpoles this year, expect to see District 9 become one of the most remembered films of 2009.

While we don't know much about District 9, we do know that it is loosely adapted off of Neill Blomkamp's short, Alive in Joburg. The premise is pretty cool. Extraterrestrials have come to South Africa (of all places) for refuge. Sound strange? Well, watch the short (here), watch the trailer below (via TrailerAddict) and begin to understand why Neill Blomkamp is one of the best directors out there. Quicktime also available at Apple.
