Todd Phillips had a lot to wrangle in The Hangover. The boys of a bachelor party get into a lot of trouble and have to reconcile it all the next day. One of their adventures includes a live tiger in their hotel room.

“You know when you do a movie, there is so much prep involved, so many meetings and the tiger trainer and me would go over everything a million times and it was like so annoying,” Phillips said. “Then all of a sudden it’s Monday of the week we were going to shoot on Wednesday and this has been going on for two months now. This tiger trainer has been working with the tigers and knows what we are doing and all this. On Monday, he walks up to me, and we are shooting something else and he goes, ‘Are we not doing the tiger this week?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we are doing it on Wednesday.’ And he goes, ‘Oh, because it says we are shooting nights on Wednesday.’ I said, ‘Yeah, it’s at night.’ He goes, ‘No one told me that it was at night.’ I said, ‘It’s in the script man, it says, Exterior. Mike Tyson’s house. Night. It’s always been night. Why does that change anything?’ He goes, ‘Well, tigers go into hunting mode at night. I wasn’t really prepared for that. Their whole attitude changes.’ I was like, ‘You have to be f*cking kidding me. Look, let’s not tell anybody that, like keep everything light. So we did.”

Phillips already mentioned another major encounter, Mike Tyson. He pushed the screenwriters for that. “Well, the writers also wrote Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, come on. It’s like pretty simple, if you are going to have balls are you going to steal a tiger from Siegfried and Roy or Mike Tyson. It’s like simple. They are my friends, I’m teasing. Really what I was thinking about, like if you woke up with a tiger, where would be the worst place that that tiger came from or what was the dumbest thing that you could have done at three in the morning? It would be to go to Mike Tyson’s house. Quite honestly, it seems like more of a challenge than Siegfried and Roy. I don’t know why. I’m just punch drunk, I’m tired.”

The boys also open their trunk to find a naked Asian gangster hopping out. “Because it was parked in an impound lot for a day and a half, so he wasn’t dead, but he took his clothes off himself. He’s pretty small, he’s pretty nimble.”

There’s also a baby, which means several sets of infants for practical purposes. “Yeah, six kids, but it’s hard to work with babies. You’ve heard that for sure before, but with this movie, we had one baby in particular, this guy Grant, who has an amazing face and I wanted to shoot most of the scenes with that one baby, which really presented a problem. He’s so expressive, he’s the guy on the poster and he’s in most of the scenes. I just love that kid and he’s such a good actor. I don’t know if I was really high, but I thought he was really involved in the scenes. He was six months, but I really thought that he was following the scene, and I was like, ‘Did you see that?’ and Ed [Helms] was like, ‘You’re crazy.’ Grant, he was amazing. I want to be working with him again when he’s one.”

The Hangover opens to theaters on June 5th.
