The Hangover
For those of you who read my box office report yesterday, I said that Pixar's Up came out on top over The Hangover. The final numbers are based on estimates, obviously, but it turns out that The Hangover had an amazing Sunday.
Can't say that I'm too surprised, as I went to see Up late last night and encountered a line for a sold out showing of the R-rated laffer. I looked to my chick and said, "You know what, The Hangover might end up coming out on top after all. I don't think expectations predicted lines at 9:30 PM on a Sunday." Now, that's not word for word, but pretty damn close. I'm not saying I called it, but I did.
Box Office Adjustment: The Hangover Beats Up
The final numbers show that The Hangover grossed $45 million while Up finished closer to 'end of the weekend' expectations with $44.4 million. If you can count, then you already picked up that The Hangover does earn the title of #1 at the box office.
Warner Bros. has got to be stoked. While R-rated comedies typically do fine at the box office, it is rare to see one open so big. Considering that the genre has a history of long box office runs, Warner Bros. should see some nice returns here.
The film's strong take has landed it the title of third best debut ever for an R-rated comedy behind Sex and the City and American Pie 2.
