Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Ice Age 3 both took in $42.5 million over the three-day weekend.
Opening on a Wednesday, Ice Age 3 won the five-day with $67.5 million against Fallen's $65 million. Still close, but the CG-animation absolutely killed it overseas. The third Ice Age installment had the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated film. With international ticket sales coming in at $148 million, the film did a total of $215.5 million worldwide. Not too shabby!
Paramount also has reason to celebrate. Transformers 2 has quickly become the highest-grossing film of the year, with a domestic take of $293.5 million in its twelfth day of release. The film lays claim to a massive worldwide tally of $591 million.
Even with Transformers and Dinosaurs hogging up the box office, there was still enough money to go around for Michael Mann's Public Enemies. Opening on Wednesday also, the gangster pic was able to gross $41 million over the five days.
Though Saturday was down 30% from 2008, the overall weekend was still up over the same frame last year.
