Bruno
Though Bruno won the weekend, it already isn't showing the same legs that Borat had.
Box Office Glory for Bruno
Universal Pictures has reason to (temporarily) celebrate with Bruno earning a sizeable $30.4 million domestically and $25 million overseas during its opening bow. The only catch is that it is already signaling loss of popularity. The film's ticket sales dropped 39% from Friday to Saturday, suggesting that most of Cohen's fans saw the film opening day. Borat, which was considered a sleeper hit, saw a 10% increase from Friday to Saturday on its opening weekend.
Though Bruno likely won't have a Borat-long run, Universal Pictures is still thrilled. "It performed fantastically on a global basis. And based on its strength, we are in a great position financially," said Universal prexy of domestic distribution Nikki Rocco.
Universal paid $42.5 million to distribute the film domestically and in eight foreign markets. This does not include marketing costs, but expect them to make all of their expenses back by next weekend. At that point, this little gay Austrian becomes a cash cow.
