Shark Week: The Great Bites Collection
Discovery Channel always looks the best on HDTV, so I wanted to see if they conquer Blu Ray too. Well, maybe the criteria’s different. I see Dr. No looking brand new and that does something to me inside. However, as new, raw footage, Shark Week: The Great Bites Collection has some clear and colorful episodes.

HD can preserve the ocean blue and maintain clarity to shoot things swimming through it. You see a bit of detail on the ocean floor, although there’s usually sand kicked around obscuring it. That’s just the footage. The sharks may be moving too fast to notice any more detail than usual, but they are clear and up close. Also, the camera’s moving too fast, since it’s floating or sinking, not really steady.
Above water, it’s perfect HD footage. You’ll see detail on the dock, the boat, the equipment. That’s not the bulk of the shows, but it gives you a context for going underwater and enjoying that aesthetic. It’s great looking underwater footage with a few breaks for naturally sunlit dry footage.
