Kong: King of Skull Island
King Kong is taking another shot at Hollywood and this time without Peter Jackson's help. Spirit Pictures has acquired Kong: King of Skull Island, a book that gives some backstory to the infamous gorilla.
Kong: King of Skull Island Movie Coming
Penned by Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland, King of Skull Island focuses on the backstory of Skull Island and how the giant gorilla became king there. It introduces other giant gorillas and dinosaurs only hinted at in the previous films. As a bit of irony -- or is it? -- the book was published at the same time Jackson was making his own remake of King Kong.
Though the studio is smaller, they seem to be taking the project seriously.
"We're very concerned with honoring Merian C. Cooper's legacy in Hollywood. We want to make sure that whatever we deliver will honor his memory," said Spirit's Steve Iles, who worked on videogames for the "Star Wars" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchises through his Pocket Studios game company.
If you're hoping the film to be like Jackson's King Kong, you should know that Spirit Pictures is going entirely in the direction of motion capture. Think Beowulf, but with a big gorilla.
