Though Funny People was expected to be the top film of the weekend, it was still hard to predict how this more-serious Judd Apatow comedy was going to do.
Box Office Winner: Funny People
The comedy did just fine, bringing in $23.4 million over the weekend. What is somewhat surprising is the fact that this sum was strong enough to give Funny People the top spot. This is officially the lowest tally for a number one all summer.
Being that the film was not a raunchy laffer like Apatow's previous, Funny People did 23% less than Knocked Up, which earned $30.7 million for Apatow back in 2007. With the low numbers, the box office ended up being down 18% from the prior weekend and 19% from the same frame last year.
