Finally an original project! After reporting on adaptations all morning I've now been given news that Hugh Jackman has agreed to star in The Greatest Showman on Earth, a contemporary musical scripted by Jenny Bicks.
Hugh Jackman for The Greatest Showman on Earth
In the film, Jackman will play P.T. Barnum, a showman with a penchant for hoaxing a gullible public as he creates the three-ring circus that made him famous. The musical also focuses on his infatuation with singer Jenny Lind -- the so-called Swedish Nightingale. The role of Jenny Lind is currently being designed for Anne Hathaway. If you caught this year's Oscar opening performance, you will remember that Hathaway had a small duet with Jackman.
When you hear contemporary musical, expect the score to feature a mix of contemporary tracks. Jackman, who has a Tony Award for The Boy From Oz, is hoping to star in a collection of movie musicals. While Showman should kick things off, Jackman is also committed to the David Magee-scripted Carousel remake at Fox 2000. He is hoping that Hathaway will co-star with him on that film as well.
