If you've been keeping up with the updates from The Three Stooges, you probably already know that Sean Penn was once committed to play Larry in the film. He later dropped out of the role, however, explaining that he needed some me time. It was a disappointment, sure, as we were only short one Stooge, Curly, with Moe being played by Benicio Del Toro.
Bouncing back, the Farrelly Brothers have convinced Paul Giamatti to step in to replace Penn as Larry.
Paul Giamatti for The Three Stooges
Boston caught up with Peter Farrelly, who revealed the casting of Giamatti.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly haven't quite settled on the cast for "The Three Stooges," but the funny filmmakers are making progress. In town this week to see Paul McCartney play at Fenway, Peter Farrelly told us that Paul Giamatti has signed on to replace Sean Penn as Larry. (Penn dropped out, citing "personal reasons.") Giamatti, who was note-perfect as Harvey Pekar in "American Splendor," was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Cinderella Man" and won raves as "John Adams."
Though it sucks losing Penn, I can't help but get geeked over Giamatti as the replacement.
