Spider-Man 3
Though James Vanderbilt's ideas for Spider-Man 4 did not go over well with Sam Raimi, who later went with another scribe by the name of David Lindsay-Abaire, Columbia was sure to keep him (and his ideas) around for the following two installments.
Vanderbilt Writing Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6
Sony Pictures has hired James Vanderbilt to pen both Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6, which will have an interconnecting storyline. The scripts won't necessarily include plot elements from the fourth installment, as it is still unknown on whether Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire or Kirsten Dunst will be back. If they decide not to return, Vanderbilt's installments will be used as a franchise reboot.
Maguire and Dunst are so far only obligated to the fourth installment, and Raimi is looking to have a lot on his plate with the adaptation of World of Warcraft. In short, there is a strong likelihood that the original talent might not return.
With so much on the fence, one would question why Sony is so amped on moving forward with Vanderbilt. In short, it's just a timing issue. The less time between each theatrical release, the better (for Sony).
