Beatles Animated in Yellow Submarine
It's official, the well of originality has dried up. That, or Disney thinks they can outdo Across the Universe when it comes to capitalizing on The Beatles in film. The studio is working with Robert Zemeckis to remake Yellow Submarine, the animation that featured music from The Beatles.
Yellow Submarine Remake Coming
Disney has been quietly brokering a complicated rights deal that would give Zemeckis access to 16 original Beatles songs for a movie he will direct in the performance-capture technology used in films like Beowulf. As you might have guessed, the film will be in 3D.
If all goes to plan, Disney wants Yellow Submarine ready for theatrical by the time of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The storyline of the original took place in Pepperland, an undersea paradise protected by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. When the band is captured by the music-hating Blue Meanies, a soldier is sent to Liverpool to fetch the Fab Four, who hop in the submarine and save the day.
Yellow Submarine could be the next step in the recent trend to get Beatles music stuck on repeat. So far it's working.
