Sony Pictures has setup Apparition to distribute Black Dynamite. Sony acquired the film after seeing it debut at Sundance.
Black Dynamite Coming October with Apparition
The blaxploitation spoof was helmed and co-written by Scott Sanders and stars Michael Jai White, who also co-wrote along with co-star Byron Minns. Sony and Apparition are excited to get distributing the film, and plan to see Black Dynamite in theaters as early as October 16th.
"Both Scott and Michael really know every film in the (blaxploitation) genre and every little detail," said Berney, who saw the film at Sundance and has been following it while building his new distribution company. "Even the strangest stuff in the film has been seen or done in those films. It's a sort of Austin Powers period comedy that appeals to younger audiences."
Since it's launch, Apparition has been moving quickly to pick up titles with the help of Sony. Black Dynamite is the fourth title for the production company, including Jane Campion's Bright Star, Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life with Brad Pitt, and The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt.
