Flash Forward is made up of an ensemble cast including many refugees from limited runs on other shows. Dominic Monaghan joined after being killed off of Lost, the same show which lends Flash Forward their Penny, Sonya Walger, who gets a lead role this time. Courtney B. Vance could have stayed on Law & Order forever, but he’d made the leap to less procedural shows years ago.
Courtney B. Vance Talks Flash Forward
“It's been three years since I did Law & Order,” Vance joked. “So those are reruns.”
Part of the appeal of Flash Forward would be figuring out his character as the show goes on. “I said, as we all did, we don't know who we are very much so in this series yet. Dom doesn't know anything about who he is, but David and Jessika and Brannon and Marc, their creative vision is infectious. Our set, you go to work, and everyone is excited.”
Keeping the actors hooked on the story might be a good way to prevent anyone from phoning it in. “I'm excited by the fact that I don't know what's going to happen. Even the audience doesn't know, but all of a sudden, David nudges me and said, ‘Gosh, you've got to read the fifth episode. Oh, Courtney, you've got to read the fifth episode. Have you read it yet?’ I haven't got to read it. ‘You've got to read it.’ So, I mean, that's different. I mean, it's different. It's exciting. I trust his vision. I trust the team that they have around them.”
Vance did read that script to episode five, at least as much as he could take. “I had to get up and walk away. I couldn't breathe. And then Joe [Fiennes] is sitting across from me, and Joe hasn't read it either. And he said, ‘Well, what happened?’ And I'm reading just a little page at a time. I was like, ‘I can't read anymore.’ He's like, ‘What?’ I mean, that's the writing. The writing is phenomenal. I think we are all in for the ride of our lives.”
