I saw Inglourious Basterds this weekend and let me start by giving my quick review: It's amazing. I loved everything about this movie. Anybody who complained that the film had too much dialogue probably just doesn't like subtitles, which the film has a lot of. I'm not complaining, however, as the two most memorable actors spoke German, and other languages, perfectly. If the Academy is looking for Best Actors to give nominations to, feel free to select Christoph Waltz (he should win this year), Michael Fassbender, whose every minute is memorable, and, of course, Brad Pitt, who proved that he is just as capable character actor; and a hilarious one too.
Thanks to the strong international cast, the film has done well at the box office overseas.
Inglourious Basterds Draws International Box Office
Though Brad Pitt was made out to be the title character here in the States, Christoph Waltz and Melanie Laurent got a lot of the spotlight in campaigns overseas. Basterds did terrific in Europe, scoring $27.5 million during the first frame; a best for Taraninto. Considering that the film centered around (German) Nazis and took place in France, it comes as no surprise that the film did will in both those territories. The German movie publication, Cinema, praised the film's Nazi villains, saying they provided "terrific performances that make the film a major cinematic event."
Universal Picture Intl. still has a lot of territories yet to be hit, 42 in fact, including Spain, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Korea and Japan. I for one will be doing my part to help TWC make their money back here in the States, as I do plan on seeing it again.
