Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself
Well lookie here. Though I originally predicted that I would be an easy weekend for Focus Features' 9, it turns out that Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself was what moviegoers were looking for. After a summer filled with violence, action and horror, I don't necessarily blame them for returning to drama.
Box Office Winner: Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself
As expected, the first weekend after Labor Day followed they typically mild routine. Except, however, Tyler Perry. With Lionsgate's help, his latest drama went on to earn a solid $24 million during its opening bow. The only other major non-horror wide release to go up against I Can Do Bad All By Myself was 9, and that didn't even earn half with $10.9 million.
Wrapping up the top three was Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, which continues to show legs with $6.5 million during its fourth frame.
The box office sum for the top three was far from impressive, sure, but nothing could have done as bad as the horror genre over the weekend. Showing a sense of burnout, moviegoers failed to see both Sorority Row and Whiteout . The pair finished sixth and seventh respectively, with a combined earnings of just over $10 million. I had my own reasons for missing each film. Sorority Row should have been called I Know What You Did Last Summer: The Sequel while Whiteout just had too many bumps in production and delays in release to keep me interested.
