Zombieland
Zombieland may have taken the top spot at the box office, which was really no surprise after the strong word of mouth, but Sony has even more reason to celebrate. They didn't just come out on top at the box office over the weekend, they damn near dominated it.
Sony Tops Box Office With Zombieland and Meatballs
Zombieland earned back its budget by making $25 million. Sony credits the film's success due to it's mixture of comedy and horror and the combination of Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg.
Coming in second was Sony's adaptation of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. the film continues to only diminish slightly from week to week with $16.7 in its third frame. Thanks in part to Cloudy and Zombieland, Sony can now boast that it is only one of two studios -- the other being Warner Bros. -- that has passed the $1 billion mark for th eighth consecutive year. While the studio is uncorking the champaign, the good people at Fox Searchlight have less reason to be happy.
Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It, opened far below expectations with $4.85 million. Maybe some good word of mouth will give this film some bearings to roll on.
