Icons of Sci Fi Toho Collection
I’ve actually never seen any of the original Godzilla movies. Except for nostalgia value, I couldn’t imagine really getting into them. Certainly, there are so many I wouldn’t even know which ones are distinguishable enough to warrant the time. However, when a DVD collection included Mothra, I knew that would be a reasonable place to start.
Icons of Sci Fi Toho Collection on DVD
This Icons of Sci Fi collection of three Toho films looks fantastic. Mothra is clear and clean so you can actually see the picture. It still looks like old, foreign film but it is nicely preserved.
Upscaled from DVD, it holds up wonderfully. You might not get the sharp lines of a Blu Ray but the picture holds together solidly. Colors pop in the island settings, daylit parade crowds and military firing monster battles.
This is indeed a good place to start my education on Japanese monster movies, if not entirely from the beginning. The Toho Collection DVD is a fine presentation of both versions of its three films (also H-Man and Battle in Outer Space.) The packaging may be cheap, with three discs crammed into one slot, but it won’t hurt the discs and they look great.
