Farscape
I don’t know if this is the first release of Farscape since I got HDTV, but either way the latest rerelease of the complete series gives me a chance to check it out and see how it holds up. Next will be the Blu Ray.
Farscape The Complete Series on DVD
As a DVD set, Farscape holds up clearly. Faces remain smooth, sets shiny. CGI ships look polished and space is a deep black.
Even though it’s not true HD, you see some details in the sets and creatures. The alien makeups have subtle textures, and the prosthetic/animatronic creatures have glorious wrinkles. Certain sets have good texture too that comes out when it’s blown up on and HD set.
There are plenty of colors too with all the different alien skin, the uniforms and sets. The visual effects hold up. They’re still TV effects but comparable to the stuff that’s on today, so you believe planets, weapons and aliens.
Until Farscape makes the next leap to Blu Ray, it’s good to know the series looks good on DVD, however you end up playing it. Even with its full frame format, the 4x3 picture is full of good stuff to see.
