Paranormal Activity
Thanks in part to a strong fall box office and a little film known as Paranormal Activity, the 2009 box office continues to remind us that it is recession proof. Seriously, ticket sales weren't affected at all by the bad economy. Instead, 2009 is going to break 2009's record-breaking haul of $9.64 billion.
Box Office Up
Already at $9.48 billion, the year's ticket sales should easily break the $10 billion milestone with the help of blockbuster films to the likes of Avatar and Sherlock Holmes.
So what's fueling the boom in ticket sales? The best theory is variety, but quality could have something to do with it also. Every season beat out the year before, and fall was especially strong. 2008 ended up seeing three films break the $100 million mark before the end of November, 2009 has already seen five do it.
Numbers were up, but somehow the studios found a way to claim they were struggling like the rest of us. Go figure...
