Anna Kendrick on Up in the Air

You may recognize Anna Kendrick as Bella’s high school friend Jessica in the Twilight films. You’ll get to see her do a lot more in Up in the Air, in which she plays the prim and proper new girl pitching webcam firings as the more cost efficient way of handling downsizing. And she’s got the tightest pony tail you’ve ever seen.

“Oh God, thankfully I’m not responsible for that,” Kendrick said. “That pony tail looks so simple and I swear to God, they spent half an hour on it every day. There was teasing and stuff involved. It looks like it should’ve been really easy but I hated that pony tail by the end of the shoot.”

Natalie Keener (Kendrick) travels the firing circuit with Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) so she can learn the system she’s trying to revolutionize. Of course, hands on experience is much different than theory.

“I love how complicated she is. I love that she’s unapologetically ambitious. That’s not a quality that I have but I admire it in her. It’s funny, I feel really protective of her and it’s funny the way the audience loves her after she falls apart. It makes me want to defend her and it makes me wish that people admired that strength in her. At the end of the day, I read a lot of screenplays about a guy on a journey who meets a girl and the girl doesn’t really do much other than kind of stand there and look pretty, and is used kind of as a device for this guy. I love that she existed for her own story and that she didn’t have a romantic story.”

The film traveled around the country shooting the airports and chain hotels the characters visit. “We shot Detroit, St. Louis, Omaha, Miami and Las Vegas, and I was shooting in Vancouver at the same time. Honestly, Omaha was my favorite place. Miami was a nightmare. It was just sticky and strange and Omaha was so lovely and we were staying in the most generic chain hotel imaginable. It was actually so charming and lovely, I’m sure that that’s because I’m from Maine and it reminded me of home but I liked it a lot.”

The whole traveler’s rewards program thing was new to Kendrick. It’s what Ryan values more than anything in the movie. “I just got my first elite status thing, but I think that’s more because I’m terrible about keeping track of my miles and stuff. I would have more if I were a more organized traveler but I always forget to enter my code or swipe my card. It’s like the lowest status but I feel pretty baller about it. I’m a disorganized traveler. All of these flights around the country, I don't even know if I got miles for them. I’m not Jason. I don’t have that obsessive compulsive thing. I know I should be because I guess it’s a waste not to. I think I’m getting all the miles now. I think it’s good.”

Up in the Air opens to theatres December 4th.
